Revision · Frontier & Field Notes
This part pointed at the moving edge: frontier chapters on disciplines still consolidating in 2024–2025, and field notes that read recent, well-documented outages as missing-guardrail lessons. The throughline is that every dated claim is a snapshot, and every outage is a system that permitted a mistake, not a person who made one.
What this part covered
Section titled “What this part covered”- Platform engineering & IDPs — the productized version of the platform idea: Internal Developer Platforms versus Portals, Backstage as a catalog-and-templates framework, Team Topologies, and the build-vs-buy cost nobody budgets for.
- FinOps & cost engineering — cloud cost as a named profession, using the FinOps Foundation’s Inform/Optimize/Operate framing, unit economics, rightsizing and commitments, scale-to-zero, and treating cost as a first-class SLO with budgets and alerts.
- AIOps & LLMs in operations — from ML-on-telemetry to the 2024–2025 wave of LLMs doing triage, log summarization, and runbook copilots (which need RAG, not just a model), plus the new LLMOps discipline of evals, prompt versioning, and token cost and latency.
- WASM & the edge — WebAssembly and WASI as a sandbox lighter than a container: near-instant cold starts, a deny-by-default capability sandbox, write-once-run-anywhere portability for edge runtimes — with an honest read on what’s still immature.
- Supply chain after xz — the March 2024
xz-utilsbackdoor, planted over years by a trusted maintainer, turned SBOMs, provenance, and signing from best practice into table stakes, and added the human layer to defense in depth. - The CrowdStrike 2024 outage — a faulty content update to a kernel-level agent crashed ~8.5 million Windows machines with no attacker involved; the missing guardrail was staged rollout — content needs rings too.
- Notable outages of the 2020s — Fastly’s latent bug woken by a valid config change, Facebook’s BGP self-erasure, and the AWS us-east-1 disruptions, each mapped to the one systemic guardrail it teaches.
- Where DevOps is going — the synthesis: platform-as-product, policy-and-everything-as-code, AI-assisted ops, supply-chain rigor, and cost-as-a-feature, all circling one constant — faster and safer feedback loops.
The takeaway
Section titled “The takeaway”The frontier chapters are aspiration — pushing operational knowledge down into products, professions, models, and runtimes so the whole organization inherits it. The field notes are humility — dated, receipted proof of what happens when a step that should have been guarded stayed manual and trusted. Same thread, both directions: the frontier is only worth chasing if it makes the next field note less likely. Next comes the hands-on capstone, where the whole machine is wired together on one small service.
